Northen Laos
The wild, mountainous region of northern Laos offers fantastic trekking opportunities, enabling you to get off the beaten track and explore well away from the crowds. A homestay experience in one of the many ethnic minority villages is highly recommended, giving you a wonderful insight into the lives of the local people. As much of the region is protected national park, and virgin rainforest the wildlife opportunities are great too, particularly in Nam Ha National Park. Great boat journeys are possible in this region too, taking in the remote villages and beautiful scenery en route.
What to see!!
Mekong Cruise. Cruising down the Mekong River for 2 days from the Thai border at Huay Xay all the way to Luang Prabang is a fantastic experience and a great introduction to Laos. We can offer two choices, either a luxury shared cruise on the board the ‘Luang Say’ overnighting at the fabulous Luang Say Lodge in Pakbeng, or a comfortable private cruise on board a traditional boat. Both options follow the same itinerary, visiting a few remote villages and Pak Ou Caves en route. The slow pace of the boat, combined with the breathtaking scenery sums up the whole ambiance of Laos perfectly.
Trek in Luang Namtha. Luang Namtha is the trekking centre of Laos. Close to Nam Ha National Park, this protected area is perfect for jungle trekking and visiting a variety of remote hill tribe villages. We highly recommend doing either the one day trek to Ban Nam Yang, a hill top village offering beautiful views of the surrounding area. The trip also includes interaction with local villagers. For a true off the beaten track trekking adventure try the 3 day Nam Ha Forest Camp trek.
Muang La hot springs offer an alternative relaxing break from the typically rough and ready northern Laos activities. Overnight at the high end resort of Muang La, where one can do a variety of 4WD village visits, traditional massages, or a bath in the natural hot springs.
